The GE Employee Management System (EMS) is a critical human resources tool that assesses employee performance and growth, and lets employees manage and plan their careers. In 2009, enhancements were made to the EMS in response to feedback received from the 2008 GE Employee Opinion Survey. These changes were made with the goal of bringing greater simplification, transparency and objectivity.

Enhancements included:

  • The EMS now incorporates an employee’s goals and objectives from the past year and assesses performance against each one.
  • Drop-down menus help capture ratings on Performance and Growth Values. Ratings for both of these categories come together for the “overall rating,” which is now clearly reflected on the Rating Summary Page.
  • A Growth Values assessment was added to the Strengths & Developments section, enabling managers and employees to have a meaningful discussion around the values.
  • A development plan has been added so employees and managers can decide future actions to leverage strengths and improve development needs, while working toward achieving career aspirations.
  • The internal resume section now automatically imports more information, such as title, function and work location. A resume PDF can be created containing the resume only, which employees can use when they apply for positions on the GE Career Opportunity System.
